Beginning a new career can be quite stressful. For example, changing careers usually requires extra education and sometimes a geographic move. Career changes should never be made lightly. After all, if you are leaving a career that’s not working out, you might have been better off never entering into that field to begin with. Before you start your new career, take these steps to make sure your new career choice is the correct one.

First, start your job hunt by researching new careers. In addition to reading up on potential jobs, use a site like Canada 411 to make sure there is employment available in your area before you make a career switch. There is no sense switching to a new career if you don’t intend to move, and there is not ample employment in your area to sustain the change.

Also, consider your transferable skills when embarking on a new career. Consider the job skills you have to see if there are elements of your experience that would transfer well to another field. For instance, if you have experience leading projects or directing others, those skills can easily be transferred into a project management role at another company. Likewise, if you have experience selling but have grown sick of the products you sell, it’s possible to transfer that skill set into selling something more fulfilling where you can make a better living.

Networking is very valuable when making a career change. Find people who enjoy a career you are interested in and learn what it takes to succeed even before you begin your journey.

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries today and many job seekers are hoping to take advantage of the demand and job security by finding a job in the medical industry. For those workers who need a job in the immediate future, the pharmacy technician is a respectable job in the medical industry that has less formal requirements than most other positions and, therefore, can be started more quickly.

But what are the roles and duties of a pharmacy technician? In general, the pharmacy technician fulfills prescription orders. A pharmacy technician could work in a hospital, helping to fill the orders of doctors and nurses or in a consumer pharmacy, filling the orders that patients bring in from their doctors.

Other duties include:

  • Count, package, and label pharmaceuticals.
  • Fill pharmaceutical orders and prepare labels.
  • Prepare I.V. mixtures and operate automated systems (if in a hospital environment).
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory and perform clerical duties.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering of pharmaceuticals.

If you’re interested in becoming a pharmacist technician and you think you would meet the basic roles and duties, start looking for employment for pharmacists now. Full-time jobs typically pay below $30,000 a year. However, there is a significant salary variance depending on the type of position and its location in the country.

Typically, a high school degree and a national certification (and perhaps a state certification) are the only educational requirements. However, the role of a pharmacy tech could lead to a better paying pharmacist position if your employer chooses to help in your educational goals.

You may already be out of a job, or you may see that your days are numbered in your current work situation. Making a career change is a daunting prospect, and many times in means you’ll need more education. With online education, it’s easier than ever to make that career change.

Blue Collar is Back

Analysts believe that today’s young adults are moving back into the blue-collar professions such as plumbing and electric. As more people move towards the dream of working in a white-collar technological world, fewer people will know how to repair a broken water line. By enrolling in an online technical school, you can acquire some job skills that will never go out of fashion. Even if you continue to work in the white-collar world, you’ll have a great “fall back.”

Degrees Matter in Healthcare

Did you know that physical therapists are required to have a Doctorate these days? Did you know that most healthcare organizations need social workers to have a Master’s degree? If you work in healthcare, it’s time to accept the fact that you’re going to need more education to be competitive. Many of the necessary post-graduate degrees, needed to work in medicine, are easily obtained from good, reputable online universities.

Work While You Learn

An online education allows you to work while you learn. You get to attend class at your convenience. In fact, online site traffic tends to spike late at night. That’s when people have their free time. Although any education is an investment, one that allows you to work is a good financial move.

Are you one of those unfortunate students who is expected to go to Dad’s alma mater? Maybe he’s an engineer, but you want to be a teacher. Is his engineering school the best place to learn about education? He probably doesn’t care. He just wants you to wear his school colors at Thanksgiving.

Higher Education Is About More Than Tradition

This is not your father’s world. You were born into the Technological Revolution. Social networking is as powerful in today’s economy as the Industrial Revolution was in your great grandfather’s economy. You have to follow the trend and get an education that allows you to succeed today.

Today, you can get a great education from an online school. In fact, your dad’s old college might be offering online courses. You will still have to do classroom work, but a great deal of your learning can happen online. That includes your degree in education. The key to any school, brick and mortar or electronic, is finding one that excels in your area of interest.

If Dad Won’t Pay Because You Said No…

This is the world’s oldest tactic. A university proud parent says he won’t pay for your education if you don’t go to the school of his choice. That means you have to get a job. You can also apply for scholarships. An online education is very attractive is this situation. Once you show your dad you can outlast his pride and succeed with your higher education, chances are the threat will go away, and he’ll help out.

After all, he wants you to be successful more than he wants you to sing his favorite school song.
