Beginning a new career can be quite stressful. For example, changing careers usually requires extra education and sometimes a geographic move. Career changes should never be made lightly. After all, if you are leaving a career that’s not working out, you might have been better off never entering into that field to begin with. Before you start your new career, take these steps to make sure your new career choice is the correct one.

First, start your job hunt by researching new careers. In addition to reading up on potential jobs, use a site like Canada 411 to make sure there is employment available in your area before you make a career switch. There is no sense switching to a new career if you don’t intend to move, and there is not ample employment in your area to sustain the change.

Also, consider your transferable skills when embarking on a new career. Consider the job skills you have to see if there are elements of your experience that would transfer well to another field. For instance, if you have experience leading projects or directing others, those skills can easily be transferred into a project management role at another company. Likewise, if you have experience selling but have grown sick of the products you sell, it’s possible to transfer that skill set into selling something more fulfilling where you can make a better living.

Networking is very valuable when making a career change. Find people who enjoy a career you are interested in and learn what it takes to succeed even before you begin your journey.

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries today and many job seekers are hoping to take advantage of the demand and job security by finding a job in the medical industry. For those workers who need a job in the immediate future, the pharmacy technician is a respectable job in the medical industry that has less formal requirements than most other positions and, therefore, can be started more quickly.

But what are the roles and duties of a pharmacy technician? In general, the pharmacy technician fulfills prescription orders. A pharmacy technician could work in a hospital, helping to fill the orders of doctors and nurses or in a consumer pharmacy, filling the orders that patients bring in from their doctors.

Other duties include:

  • Count, package, and label pharmaceuticals.
  • Fill pharmaceutical orders and prepare labels.
  • Prepare I.V. mixtures and operate automated systems (if in a hospital environment).
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory and perform clerical duties.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering of pharmaceuticals.

If you’re interested in becoming a pharmacist technician and you think you would meet the basic roles and duties, start looking for employment for pharmacists now. Full-time jobs typically pay below $30,000 a year. However, there is a significant salary variance depending on the type of position and its location in the country.

Typically, a high school degree and a national certification (and perhaps a state certification) are the only educational requirements. However, the role of a pharmacy tech could lead to a better paying pharmacist position if your employer chooses to help in your educational goals.
